Glengad United were knocked out of the Inishowen league Cup semi final after a 3 goals to 1 defeat to Clonmany Shamrocks in Shamrock Park on Sunday last. Played in front of a sizeable crowd, the Glengad boys will feel that this is surely one that they let slip.
A goal to the good after 30 minutes, Glengad were reduced to 10 men soon afterwards and no team in Donegal can play against Clonmany on their own patch for 60 minutes with 10 men and expect to win. For the first half hour Glengad took the game to their more illustrious opponents and had hit the woodwork before a clever free kick put them ahead on the 30 minute mark. Alan Orr played in a free to the near post and John G McLaughlin flicked on for Patrick McDermott to dive in and head to the net. At this stage there was only going to be one winner the way Glengad were playing but the sending off of Terence Doherty changed the game completely. Glengad held Clonmany comfortably until the 70th minute when they got their equalising goal from the penalty spot and then they added 2 more in the last 10 minutes to ensure the home side progressed to the final. This was a great performance by Glengad but no cigar at the end.
Glengad Reserves qualified for the semi final of the Reserves League Cup with a 3 goals to 1 victory over Culdaff Reserves in Culdaff on Sunday morning past. Paul McDermott put Glengad ahead in the first half and his striking partner, Daniel McDaid added a second early in the second half. Culdaff reduced the deficit midway through the second half but Paul McDermott rounded off a fine performance with the third and clinching goal to send Glengad through to a semi final tussle with Quigley’s Point reserves – here’s hoping they have better luck than the senior team. Best for Glengad were Michael & Brian Doherty, Paul McDermott and Aidan Houten.
The coming weekend will see the senior team host Illies Celtic in the premier League on Sunday at 2.00pm. Last season Illies pushed Glengad all the way in the 1st Division and the 4 games played were closely fought affairs.
The reserve team wraps up their League Cup campaign with a home tie also against Illies reserves in Cholmcille Park at 11.00am.
The fixtures are as follows: Glengad United v Illies Celtic at 2.00pm at the Crua and Glengad Reserves v Illies Reserves at 11.00am in Cholmcille Park.
Last week’s monthly meeting was postponed and will now take place on Monday next, 12th October at 9.00pm in the Community Centre. All club members are asked to attend.
